The 2016 Paralympic Games got off to a great start in Rio de Janeiro opened to a backdrop of colour and music, despite the ongoing political tension in Brazil.
Competition proper starts later on Thursday and it was preceded by thousands of performers, who were involved either side of the two-hour procession of competing countries at the Maracana.
The recent political crisis was however evident during the opening ceremony after Brazilian president Michael Temer was booed during his speech. Rio 2016 organizing committee president Carlos Nuzman was also booed when he was giving his speech.
This is coming 24 hours after former president Dilma Roussef, who was recently impeached, vacated her official residence.
