Woman sentenced to death for killing co-wife’s baby

Elena Nyambura and her accomplices in the dock. Photo/AGNES OLOO The High Court in Nairobi on Thursday sentenced a woman and three of her relatives to death for brutally killing her co-wife’s 18-month-old daughter.
The woman whose co-wife was initially her house help said jealousy drove her alongside three others to commit the heinous act.

Elena Nyambura committed the murder in 2009 at Kariobangi Estate, Nairobi after her husband took in their house help as a second wife.

Appearing before Justice Fred Ochieng’, Elena confessed that she committed the act after perceiving that her husband loved the house help’s baby more than he loved her baby, adding that the anger led her to killing the innocent baby.

Seven years after the unfortunate incident, Elena stated that she had learnt the error of her ways and was remorseful for the gruesome murder.
The judge however noted that his hands were tied on the matter by the law, adding that he had to do justice by the infant and her family.
The four were sentenced to death for the murder.
