Nasir al-Wuhayshi, a former secretary to Osama Bin Laden and al Qaeda
number two leader has been killed in a US airstrike, according to
international media reports.
He was the leader of Yemen’s affiliate to al Qaeda.
Al Qaeda, in a video released on June 16, Tuesday confirmed the death
of Nasir alongside two other militants and immediately announced that a
new leader had been appointed.
Al Qaeda is believed to be the apex of terror group al-Shabaab which has claimed responsibility for deaths of hundreds of Kenyans, with the BBC reporting that Wuhaysi built one of the most active al-Qaeda branches.
The terror group al-Shabaab has been actively recruiting members in different towns of Kenya.
On June 14, Sunday, Kenya defense forces pursued and killed over a dozen of the terrorists after they attacked army barracks in Lamu.
Two Kenyan soldiers died in the attack.

NBC News
confirmed the authenticity of the video from the official media arm of
al Qaeda’s Yemeni affiliate which named Wuhayshi’s successor as Qassim
al Rimi.
The channel reports that Wuhayshi served as secretary to bin Laden at
the time of the September 11 attacks and then rose in the al Qaeda
hierarchy.
After 9/11, he fled Afghanistan as US forces moved in, and was arrested after crossing the border into Iran.
Iranian authorities turned him over to authorities in his native
Yemen, where he escaped from prison and reconnected with al Qaeda.
