This was a routine, pre-scheduled appointment. The Queen has now left the hospital.'
Today, the Queen was back to business as usual and was greeted on the steps of the Royal Albert Hall by WI officials Janice Langley and Jana Osborne before being ushered inside.
Her Majesty, who is president of her local WI group at Sandringham in Norfolk, was accompanied by her daughter, who is an associate of the Gloucestershire Federation, and daughter-in-law, who regularly attends the Bagshot WI close to her family home.
Once inside, the royal party heard the National Anthem before getting into the spirit of things and giggling as a live video link with the first Women’s Institute in Anglesey suffered a few technical hitches.
The Queen was also shown a centenary baton that had toured WI groups the length and breadth of the country and presented a cup to the winner of a creative writing contest.
Originally established to offer educational opportunities for women in rural communities, the WI is now the largest women’s voluntary group in the UK with more than 212,000 members in over 6,600 WIs.
In recent years it has worked hard to shake off its ‘jam and Jerusalem image’ and attract younger members – although the royal party still took part in a rousing rendition of the hymn today.
