For two
seasons it languished in the ratings despite being heavily promoted and
having an all-star cast. Finally in 2013 it was canceled.
But
now Smash is making a comeback for a one-night-only Broadway benefit
performance of Bombshell, the fictional Marilyn Monroe themed musical at
the heart of the NBC series.
According to Playbill,
the production will include 22 songs from the show and performances
from some of the original cast including Megan Hilty as the blonde icon.
The comeback: The canceled series Smash will return for a one-night-only Broadway performance of the musical Bombshell
Featuring
music from Tony Award-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott
Whittman, the show is also bringing back executive producers Craig Zadan
and Neil Meron, the team responsible for putting on Peter Pan Live
earlier this month.
The live staging is set for June 15, 2015 and will benefit the Actors Fund of America, a charitable organization that assists performing arts professionals with a broad spectrum of programs.
While the Broadway venue has yet to be announced, tickets are set to go on sale in early 2015.
Legends: Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty vied for the lead role of the blonde icon on the series
During
its two-season run, Smash depicted the drama behind putting on the
fictional musical Bombshell, a biographical account of the rise and fall
of screen legend Monroe.
The
star-studded cast included Emmy-winner Debra Messing, Oscar winner
Anjelica Huston and American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee.
Katharine and Broadway vet Megan Hilty were at the center of the story as they competed to land the lead role of Marilyn.
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes: While no
word if Katharine will return for the Broadway performance, Megan will
take part in the charity staging of the show
Curtain call: But despite lavish musical numbers, the series faltered in the ratings and aired its final episode in May 2013
The series premiered to much fanfare in February 2012 and was executive produced by Steven Spielberg.
But
despite lavish musical numbers, the show faltered in the ratings and
was eventually moved to the dreaded Saturday night spot on the schedule
before airing its final episode in May 2013.
While Hilty will reportedly return for the Broadway performance on June 15, the rest of the cast has yet to be been revealed.
